Whirlpool Sues LG Electronics to Invalidate Patent

2009-10-19
Whirlpool Corp. sued South Korea's LG Electronics Inc., asking a judge to invalidate a U.S. patent for a refrigerator that includes an icemaker in the door

According to a Bloomberg report, the lawsuit, filed in federal court in Wilmington, DE, U.S., follows a case filed Oct. 7 in Newark, N.J., in which LG accused Whirlpool of infringing the same 2008 patent through sales of Maytag-brand refrigerators.

'Plaintiffs have not infringed and do not infringe, directly or indirectly, any valid and enforceable claim' of the patent, lawyers for Benton Harbor, Whirlpool said in the Delaware complaint.

LG previously sued Whirlpool in Delaware in April 2008, claiming infringement of three other refrigerator-component patents.

Separately, the report said that Whirlpool lost, for a second time, a decision in its bid to block U.S. imports of refrigerators made by LG. The patent relates to the storage of ice through the appliance door.
